Day One – Strategic Planning Forum

Tuesday 6 March 2012

'Leading change in the delivery of disability services – what the New Model will mean for your organisation'

In addition to a dynamic conference programme, we are offering a Forum on Tuesday 6 March which will focus on the New Models of service delivery being introduced to our sector and openly discuss the challenges and implications that these will present for our members.

This will be a key workshop for senior managers, board chairs and board members.

Day Two– Meeting the challenges of inclusion

Wednesday 7 March 2012

This is the first day of the conference proper. Highlights include a panel discussion, wherein disabled people and family reps discuss what it feels like to be included and the keys for inclusion.

'Digital storytelling as a tool for disabled people to have a voice' will be explored, as will 'What works in organisations to build connected community? Where have we seen fantastic community inclusion? What were the key ingredients? And what can we apply at our workplace?'

Five work streams will allow participants to break into special interest groups which include:

  1. Support Workers Forum
  2. Evaluating outcomes for disabled people
  3. Life Span – Emerging best practices for inclusion of elders with disabilities
  4. Local area coordination: the Australian and New Zealand experience
  5. Workforce Development – collaboration for outcomes across the network

The day concludes with a keynote presentation by John Allen of Be.Accessible titled 'By inspiring us all to think differently about access we will raise the hopes and dreams of all people'.

Day Three – The economics of inclusion

Thursday 8 March 2012

The last day of the conference begins with 'The Economics of Inclusion – Why the government must invest in the disability sector', presented by Dr Brendan Long.

Other features include 'Living life to the full – Using Integrated Dance programmes with people who have a disability' and a second group of five special interest forums:

  1. Social innovation and social enterprises’ contribution to our sector
  2. The Journey from school to life
  3. Building partnerships with Maori disability leadership and Iwi
  4. FacePlace – creating a dynamic and experimental learning environment focused on developing self advocacy skills and awareness amongst a group of students with an intellectual disability
  5. Evaluating outcomes for disabled people – Personal planning outcomes. How can we do it better so people achieve 'a life like any other'?

'Welfare Reform and its implications for people with disabilities' will be discussed in an afternoon plenary session, followed by a facilitated panel discussion titled 'Welfare Reform analysis and comment'

'Delivery of disability sector qualifications and workforce development' closes teh afternoon's plenary sessions, which is then followed by an opportunity to hear senior government officials views on welfare reform and also to hear the independent analysis of what it might mean for people with disabilities.

We will finish our conference considering innovation and the role of innovation for Boards, CEOs and disabled people as we move into the rapid changes signalled ahead.
